Abstract

Recently for the rapid and non-destructive determination of oxygen in the field of steel-making, the 14MeV neutron activation analysis has been used. It is necessary for this application to use the most reliable and fast sample transfer system because of the short half life of 16N.In this paper, the essential provisions to be required for this purpose are discussed. The pneumatic transfer system is most suitable, and the transfer speed of sample from the bombardment position to the measuring place is required to be less than 3 sec. from nuclear properties of 16N. In order to secure the operation of whole system full-automatically, the tandem connected two ordinary air-blowers inversely are used, which made possible to control the sample transferring by only the electrical means. Also the required pneumatic tube is only one unit by using C-R monitor system, and less expensive, and it can easily be replaced, if some contamination is occurred inside the tube. The whole systems of the neutron activation analysis unit using this pneumatic system are practically utilized in several steel making companies in Japan for oxygen contents control of L-D converter.
