Abstract

This qualitative research focuses on practice nurses' perceptions of their role and philosophy with implications for the role of support workers. A Heideggarian Phenomenological approach was used to explore opportunistic and purposeful samples of thirteen nurses, from various general practice work environments in Devon, between October 1995 and April 1996. Focus group interviews enabled participants to express themselves, exploring their role and philosophy in depth and to reflect and consider the reasons for their opinions of support worker roles. Most practice nurses reported delegating tasks to support workers for non clinical work at some time, and some practice nurses enabled support workers to undertake minor clinical roles in the right circumstances. Practice nurses always, however, felt it was essential to undertake initial assessment themselves.
