Abstract
Devising an urban regeneration strategy that is low cost and boldly modern yet pleasing to preservationists and non‐disruptive to residents sounds like an impossible goal. Yet the multidisciplinary Beijing practice People's Architecture Office (PAO) have achieved it with their modular system Plugin. Mass‐customisable and adaptable to a multitude of uses and scales, it has already been deployed in a range of settings across China. PAO co‐founder James Shen tells the story of how it works and how it was developed – through a combination of government support and close input from clients.
