Abstract

In the center of the author’s attention are the plucked string instruments from the Renaissance era. The purpose of the article is to review the development of these instruments through the mutual influence of different types, construction and shapes, such as the lute, viola, 4- and 5-string guitar. The author brings arguments and historical facts on the constructive development of these instruments, completing the repertoire, the appearance of textbooks and collections of pieces of various genres, which lead to the application in the composition and interpretation practice of the guitar in the contemporary sense of the word.
