Abstract

Results of solution of problems related to the plotting of rational cross-sectional shapes of hydrotechnical tunnels with respect to a given normal tangential-stress distribution on its perimeter are presented as a function of the depth of embedment of the tunnel and values of the coefficient of thrust of the enclosing rock. It is demonstrated that the condition whereby there are no points on the perimeter of the tunnel at which values of the tangential normal stresses exceed the ultimate tensile and compressive strengths of the enclosing rock may serve as a criterion for this purpose. Examples of the problem’s solution are presented.
