Abstract

Within a design research environment, paths to innovation often involve the development of new materials and the use of emerging technologies. Material and technological innovation, in turn, entails the investigation of new forms and processes, so as to test the boundaries of visual expression and interaction design. The design process itself often needs to adapt, to change, and to evolve in response to the experimental fibers and electronic components of wearable artifacts. The material qualities of those new components affect the process of creating garments in complex ways, necessitating an iterative approach. This article will present a case study and analyze the design production of PLEET, a dress that integrates a new kind of luminous fibers. The objective, from a design perspective, was to show that illuminated electronic textiles could be elegant and subtle and not merely relegated to the realm of dance clubs and rave culture.
