Abstract

This chapter presents an overview of power line communication (PLC)‐based home and industry automation systems with interesting application examples. It also presents an overview of the most important protocols for home automation. First, the X10 narrowband PLC protocol for communication between electronic devices is introduced. Then, the KNX/EIB standard for in home and building automation bus systems is discussed. The chapter focuses on a sample application of PLC for industry automation, namely refrigeration container ships, based on the international standard ISO 10368:2006(E). The physical requirements of the system which include the transmission rate, modulation methods, and impedance specifications as well as the system components are discussed. The chapter provides a summary of the communication protocol AMIS CX1 profile of the company Siemens AG for PLC between electricity meters, breakers and other grid elements and the data concentrator points at central stations in the low‐voltage distribution grid.
