Abstract
Platycerium is a pan-tropic fern genus that is popularly used as an ornamental plant. Among the four Thai native species, P. coronarium and P. ridleyi are phylogenically sister species according to DNA analysis. Hybridization between these species was conducted using mix-spore technique. Among 1,000 transplanted sporelings, 8 plants were identified as interspecific hybrids. The F1 hybrid population showed intermediate characteristics of the parents. The hybrid, which was named Platycerium × kitshakoodiense, could produce spore patches. However, the spores from young plants were non-viable. After producing spore patches for two years, spores with 50% viability were finally attained. The F2 population showed segregation of shield and fertile fronds.
