Abstract
This chapter attempts to delineate the nature of Middle Platonism by exploring the doctrines of the soi-disants followers of Plato assuming their common commitment to Ur-Platonism (UP), as the arbitrariness of this periodization of ancient philosophies has to some extent led to the difficulties of defining Middle Platonism. The term “Middle Platonism” is typically used to refer to the Platonic doctrines found first in Antiochus of Ascalon (c. 130–c. 68 BCE) especially after his break with his mentor Philo of Larissa in the so-called Sosus affair around 87. Middle Platonism, by default as it were, is said to end with Plotinus (204/5–270 CE) and the onset of Neoplatonism.
