Abstract
This paper presents a passage from book 10 of Plato’s Republic as a text on food poisoning. The official aim of the passage is an argument for the indestructibility of the soul (less weak than usually held) in the context of a theory of specific bad-makers. Food poisoning is treated in considerable theoretical detail as part of a complex body soul analogy. Focusing on this aspect uncovers an elaborate analysis of how things get worse and a remarkable view on disease.
