Abstract

This chapter examines Plato's political philosophy as presented in the Republic and the Laws. It shows that Plato's view is state and community oriented and that Plato's account of private law fits this model. As such, the chapter argues that Plato is the progenitor of the modern understanding of political and legal philosophy.
