Abstract

Pt, Pd and Rh concentrations increase with proximity to roads with highest traffic flow in the small town of Hathersage, west of Sheffield, UK. Road dust has highest values with maximums of 100 ppb Pt, 305 ppb Pd, 33 ppb Rh, 30 ppb Ru, 22 ppb Ir and 144 ppb Au. Lower values occur in gully waste with maximums of 35 ppb Pt, 90 ppb Pd, 10 ppb Rh, 8 ppb Ru, 1 ppb Ir and 25 ppb Au and decrease further in stream sediments with maximums of 40 ppb Pt, 25 ppb Pd and 20 ppb Au. A Pt/Pd ratio of approximately 1 and a Pt/Rh ratio of 3.7 in road dust characterize PGE due to vehicle emissions in this residential town with no point sources for PGE. Highest concentrations of Au, Ru and Ir occur in residential areas, especially near the school.
