Abstract
The way digital platforms change interrelations and flows within supply chains is often disruptive. By combining information from different stakeholders on an almost real-time basis, platforms have started to be a competitive business model for traditional pipeline solutions. Platforms might be quickly implemented at any stage of the supply chain process: from sourcing to manufacturing to differentiation of distribution channels. Additionally, the disruptive impact of platforms in supply chain management is noticeable in their ability to develop flexible or sustainable supply chain business models which immediately respond and adapt to fluctuations in the external environment. However, when analysing a platform business model in terms of supply chain management, one can observe several conditions that have to be met to benefit from this solution. The aim of this chapter is to indicate the potential place of a digital platform within supply chain management and its role in this process. The conditions for successful platform implementation in terms of supply chain management and competitiveness in an uncertain environment will also be discussed.
