Abstract

AbstractPlate heat exchangers (PHE) are good replacement for shell and tube heat exchanger in food, pharmaceutical and chemical industries due to their high thermal performance. PHE thermal performance can be enhanced by increasing surface area, but this option is limited considering space, pressure losses, pumping power and operational cost. Alternative option is to use fluid with high heat transfer properties. Nanofluids are best heat transfer fluid among the conventional fluids (water and thermal oils). In this chapter, role of nanofluid in enhancing thermal performance of plate heat exchanger has been reviewed. Effect of nanofluid concentration, shape of nanoparticles, Reynold number, geometric parameters of PHE, inlet temperature of nanofluid on effectiveness, heat transfer rate, heat transfer coefficient, pressure drop has been studied.
