Abstract The hardness stress-strain response of cyclotrimethylenetrinitramine (RDX) crystals gives emphasis to a rather narrow difference in plasticity and cracking behaviour that, in the latter case, is reasoned to be significantly enhanced because of crack surface energy lowering by melting during combustion.
