Abstract

The Coulomb yield condition and its associated flow rule is used to solve the title problem, i.e. what internal supporting forces would be necessary to prevent granular rock from breaking into horizontal, rectangular section coal-mining tunnels. The analysis based upon an upper and lower bound approach, shows several peculiarities so that it could be of interest in itself.
