Abstract

A method has been developed for producing free-standing crystals of hcp $^{4}\mathrm{He}$. Stress-strain relations have been measured for such crystals plastically deformed under conditions of unconstrained shear. An upper bound for the flow stress of 5\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}${10}^{4}$ dyn/${\mathrm{cm}}^{2}$ is determined. Comparison is made with experiments on constrained crystals.
