Abstract

The stability of ion acoustic waves in the presence of electron plasma wave turbulence is considered when the electron return current is also present. An exact wave kinetic theory is used, which is valid for arbitrary values of the ion acoustic wavelength. This work generalizes previous results, which were valid only in the geometric optics approximation. The present ion acoustic instabilities can be relevant to the understanding of laser energy absorption in laser target interaction.
