Abstract

We have used scattering matrix calculations and far-infrared transmission spectroscopy to investigate the coupling between free radiation and two-dimensional plasmon resonances in an AlGaAs/GaAs heterostructure. This coupling is usually mediated by an overlaid metal grating, but we demonstrate that a modulated high mobility 2DEG also acts as a highly efficient coupler. In cases where a single plasmon resonance is coupled by both an overlaid metal grating and a modulated 2DEG, the total coupling strength depends on the relative phases of the electric fields generated from the incident radiation by the two couplers. We calculate the total coupling for a range of grating profiles and modulation amplitudes, and obtain results in good agreement with experimental determinations of the coupling strength.
