Abstract

We have constructed for the first time a plasma shutter as optical switch for far-infrared (FIR) laser radiation. The plasma that blocks the FIR radiation is generated by an electric discharge and/or by a CO 2-laser, which acts simultaneously as pump of the FIR laser. We have now reached truncation times as short as 0.7 ns for 496/smm FIR radiation.
