Abstract

The therapeutic plasma exchange is an alternative medical tool in certain pathologies in which conventional treatment has not obtained an effective response. In clinical practice therapeutic plasma exchange is also known as therapeutic plasma exchange, in which a given volume of plasma is removed, in order to remove particles of high molecular weight, pathogens or decrease the level of circulating immune complexes or other components present plasma involved in the pathological immune response and are held responsible for a disease or its clinical manifestations. The American Society for Apheresis (ASFA for its acronym in English) and the American Association of Blood Banks (AABB for its acronym in English) conducted a clinical guidelines based on evidence and updated periodically. The latest update was published in 2013. In this article we summarize the evidence published in these guidelines and scientific literature until January 2015 that evaluates the usefulness of plasma / plasma replacement in critically ill patients.
