Abstract

Density-density response functions are evaluated for nondegeneratemultisubband electron systems in the random-phase approximation forarbitrary wavenumber and subband index. We consider bothquasi-two-dimensional and quasi-one-dimensional systems forelectrons confined to the surface of liquid helium. The dispersionrelations of longitudinal intrasubband and transverse intersubbandmodes are calculated at low temperatures and for long wavelengths. We discuss the effects of screening and two-subband occupancy on theplasmon spectrum. The characteristic absorption edge of theintersubband modes is shifted relatively to the single-particleintersubband separation and the depolarization shift correction canbe significant at high electron densities.
