Abstract
The use of glow discharge plasma for the thermochemical surface hardening of ferrous components is reported to hold significant advantages compared to the more traditional solid, salt bath or gaseous media. As a result, plasma nitriding, in particular, has been in wide commercial use for a number of years, especially in West Germany and the USA. Although industry in the UK has been slower to exploit this technology, the continuing expansion of subcontract heat treaters into this area is a testament to its commercial maturity. In the current paper the principles of these techniques are explained and their advantages and industrial status examined in more detail
