Abstract

The concentrations of plasma prolactin, thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) were measured in normal Japanese and British adolescent, pre-menopausal, menopausal and post-menopausal women. The mean levels of prolactin and TSH were similar in both races for all age categories studied. The concentrations of plasma LH were also similar for both races except for pre-menopausal women where the average level in Japanese was higher than in British women (P = 0·05). The concentrations of plasma FSH were also similar for both races except for the post-menopausal group, where the British women had a higher average level than Japanese women (P = 0·02). These results do not support the concept that the low incidence of breast cancer in Japan compared with that in Western countries is due to basic endocrinological differences.
