Abstract

Fourteen patients with prostatic carcinoma were treated with various doses of diethylstilboestrol (DES) and Premarin (conjugated equine oestrogens). DES ( 15 mg/day) produced a significant increase in plasma concentrations of growth hormone and prolactin and a decrease in plasma concentrations of testosterone, luteinizing hormone and follicle stimulating hormone. Premarin ( 15 mg/day) reduced plasma concentrations of testosterone and luteinizing hormone but had no effect on plasma concentrations of growth hormone and prolactin. Plasma levels of thyroid stimulating hormone were unaffected by treatment. The oral administration of glucose reduced plasma levels of prolactin.
