Abstract
SummaryPlasma progesterone levels were measured by a competitive binding method in a total of 177 blood samples obtained from 17 patients after the intra‐amniotic instillation of hypertonic saline for termination of a second trimester pregnancy. A mean fall in plasma progesterone of 51 per cent was observed before abortion of the fetus. There was a highly significant correlation between falling progesterone values and the instillation‐abortion interval (p<0.001).
