Abstract

The force-balanced coils (FBCs) which can drastically reduce the vital centering force, have been proposed for tokamak coil systems. TODOROKI-1 is the small pulsed tokamak device with FBCs. The plasma current reached 10 kA and the pulse duration was 0.7 ms with a two-step FBC excitation scheme. The electron temperature was about 50 eV and the electron density was 2/spl times/10/sup 19/ m/sup 3/. The plasma displacement has been evaluated through approximating the plasma current by six filaments, and the inward shift in the later phase of the discharge was found. A next device's concept to demonstrate better plasma position control with optimized FBCs and vertical field coils and the winding modulation of FBCs are being formed. The FBCs are composed of some segmented coils that can simplify the maintenance of the device.
