Abstract

Thin films containing anion and cation groups were prepared by hydrolysis and quaternization of polymers plasma-polymerized from bis(dimethylamino)methlvinylsilane (BDMAMVS). The products were investigated by electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis and infrared spectroscopy. Amide groups in the plasma polymers from BDMAMVS were hydrolyzed to carboxyl groups with an octylbromide / water mixture (1 : 6 mole ratio) at 80°C for 16 h. Amine and amineoxide groups in the plasma polymers were quaternized by exposure to methylbromide vapor at 50°C for 48 h to give quaternary ammonium groups. The combination of hydrolysis and quaternization yielded thin films containing both anion and cation groups.
