Abstract

Selective oxidation of Cu-1.0 wt % Al alloy was found to be achieved by using microwave plasma at 1073 K in a mixed gas of 10 % 02 and 90 % N2 at a total pressure of 2 torr (∼266.644 Pa). The selective oxidation was confirmed by electron diffraction analysis of aluminium oxide particles, microstructural observations and hardness measurements of the internal oxidation layer. Electrical conductivity and the thermal expansion coefficient of the oxidized specimens were measured. The morphology and distribution of the aluminium oxide particles formed in the oxidized alloy is also discussed.
