Abstract

The light ion accelerator (1.5 MV, 4 Ω) at Cornell University is being used to study the characteristics of an applied Bz , or ‘‘barrel,’’ diode. We report here the results of a series of experiments utilizing a plasma opening switch. With a magnetically insulated ion diode load, the peak diode voltage increased from 1.5 to 1.8 MV and the ion power increased from 50 to 80 GW when a plasma opening switch was used. Our results are compared with existing theories of plasma opening switch operation.
