Abstract

The highest specific activities 30 min. after intraportal administration of 14C-5HT were observed in the intestine, liver, kidney and spleen of normal rats. In cirrhotic rats significantly lower activities were found in these organs, with the exception of the kidney. Platelet-poor plasma contained high radioactivity consisting of over 95% of the metabolites of 14C-5HT. The similarity of the plasma and urinary metabolite patterns suggests that the kidney has no essential role in the metabolization of 5HT. It seems obvious that a great part of the 5HT liberated from intestinal storagesis rapidly inactivated by its metabolism. This inactivation process is accelerated in cirrhotic rats.
