Abstract

Laboratory tests were undertaken to assess kininogen and kinin levels in venous plasma during pregnancy and labor. A control group of 18 normal adult men and women and a study group of 54 pregnant women some of whom were tested several times during pregnancy were studied. The laboratory procedures are explained and the results described tabulated and graphed. Kininogen levels were found to be significantly higher in the pregnant women than in either the control males or the control females. The period of gestation and plasma kinonogen levels were found to be linearly and positively correlated. Differences between the study and the control groups as to mean plasma kinin levels were not significant in most cases. There was no significant linear correlation between kinin and kininogen levels in plasma in any of the groups studied. No definite trends were found in the kinin or kininogen levels at delivery. Results from this study are compared with those from previous studies in the field.
