Abstract

Experiments performed with the Homopolar V, an apparatus consisting of a coaxial electrode system immersed in a longitudinal field and with neutral gas injection in the middle plane are analyzed from the point of view of converting this device into a plasma gun. The discussion of these experiments leads to the conclusion that Homopolar V produces a deuterium plasma with a kinetic temperature in the keV range at a density of the order of 1014 ions/cm3. Since such a plasma is very desirable for injection purposes a modified homopolar device, the Homopolar Gun I is proposed. The basic considerations of the design and expected operation of this gun are discussed.
