Abstract

The theory of plasma emission is reviewed emphasizing general concepts rather than the details of the analysis. The generation of the Langmuir turbulence, its evolution due to nonlinear processes, and the plasma emission processes are described. Several outstanding difficulties in the applications to solar radio bursts are discussed, concentrating on those with implications on local density inhomogeneities in the sources.
