Abstract

The plasma amino acids in 18 patients with chronic renal failure on intermittent dialytic therapy were determined. All the patients exhibited an amino acid imbalance in which there was a significantly lower percentage of essential amino acid nitrogen (including tyrosine) in the total amino acid nitrogen. The percentage of essential amino acid nitrogen was lowest when the plasma creatinine was high. The mean levels of plasma transferrin and the ratio of the plasma tyrosine to phenylalanine were significantly reduced in these patients. A correlation was observed between the tyrosine to phenylalanine ratio and the percentage of essential amino acid nitrogen. It is concluded that both inadequate dietary intake and the degree of uraemia contribute to the amino acid imbalance.
