Abstract
A new Monte Carlo dynamics is proposed for Z 2 lattice gauge based on the percolation of spanning surfaces, analogous to the percolation of clusters used in the Swendsen-Wang algorithm for the Potts model. In three dimensions, the resulting dynamical exponent for critical slowing down is reduce to z = 0.61 ± 0.05 relative to the heat bath exponent of z = 2.1 ± 0.2. Extensions to continuum gauge theories in higher dimensions are discussed.
