Abstract

Plants that cause dermatitis, on a world-wide and an Australian basis, in plant orders of the class Angiospermae are presented, together with some of the more important causes of adverse skin reactions—mechanical injury, latex, oxalates, isothiocyanates, furocoumarins and sesquiterpine lactones. Attention is drawn to the contribution that systematic botanists can five to dermatological studies, and to the importance of lodging voucher botanical specimens, in recognized herbaria, to support published data. The difficulty of presenting in this paper the full range of plants that cause dermatitis, together with their active constituents, is emphasized.
