Abstract

Plant specimens are fundamental to taxonomic teaching and research. Methods of collection, preparation (pressing and drying), and identification of plants specimens are itemized. The herbarium is the storehouse for pressed and dried plant specimens and serves as a reference centre, data storehouse, and source for research materials. Herbarium procedures concerning arranging, attaching, labelling, and accessioning of individual plant specimens are presented. Step-by-step herbarium operational procedures are detailed regarding the preservation, handling and filing of herbarium specimens, and protocols governing loans and exchanges with other herbaria.
