Abstract

Robertson I. M. L. (1978) Planning the location of recreation centres in an urban area: a case study of Glasgow, Reg. Studies 12, 419–427. A distance minimising algorithm (Tornqvist) is used to provide an objective assessment of various schemes for the provision of recreation centres. The technique, applied in this case to Glasgow district, is particularly appropriate since accessibility has been shown to be an important factor in the successful location of such centres. As well as indicating the theoretically ideal locations the technique can test the accessibility of sites already in use or scheduled for future development. A series of maps is produced showing possible sets of catchment areas together with their population complements and average travelling distances.
