Abstract

This talk focused on two problems: criteria for speech act definitions and a criterion for the initial choice of referring expressions. The first problem arises in defining speech acts in a form where they can be used - as operators in a (STRIPS-like) problem-solving system. The principle advocated here was one of "conversational competence" - could a problem-solving system, given a goal and knowledge of its conversant's beliefs and goals, issue all and only those speech acts that people would find appropriate under the corresponding circumstances?
