Abstract

It is obvious from the previous chapter that there may be difficulties in implementing cancer detection techniques as control measures applied to populations at large; doubts may also arise as to the likely benefit from such procedures. This chapter presents the main questions to be answered before a cancer detection programme is instituted; these questions can conveniently be considered under the headings: 1. Importance of the disease to be controlled. 2. Knowledge of its natural history. 3. Effectiveness of the detection procedure. 4. Effectiveness of the treatment resources. 5. Operational problems in setting up a screening programme.
