Abstract

1. 1. The oxytocic agent, planetocin, found in aqueous extracts of the gut of the cockroach, Periplaneta americana, occurs almost exclusively in the midgut caeca and is always associated with the ability to inactive bradykinin. 2. 2. The material has no pharmacological action on musculature of the cockroach gut. 3. 3. These findings support the view that the activity is a property of a protease of the trypsin type. 4. 4. Similar oxytocic activity was demonstrated for extracts of the gut of the locust, Chortoicetes terminifera.
