Abstract

In this paper E-polarized plane wave scattering by finite staggered parallel plate waveguide cavities has been analyzed. The scattering analyses of this kind have been done mainly by numerical schemes such as the mode matching method. The Wiener-Hopf technique has also been shown to be applicable for this class of parallel plate waveguide geometry, but it may have a difficulty for staggered cases. Here, assuming that the scattering objects are quite large, we utilize a high frequency asymptotic method. The present formulation includes the effects of the multiple edge interaction terms, which enable us to use our high frequency formulation for rather small scatterers. We have used an extended version of the geometrical theory of diffraction (GTD), called the equivalent source method to formulate the E-polarized plane wave scattering field by open-ended parallel plate waveguide cavities. In order to show the validity of our formulation, the radar cross section (RCS) of the scatterer has been computed and compared with those obtained by measurement and other formulations.
