Abstract

A crack-line-loaded specimen of modined WOL design was adapted for toughness testing of high strength sheet materials. A wedge-opening device was used to load the specimen and propagate the crack. Because of the specimen configuration and loading system, the crack never becomes unstabie, and full crack growth resistance, R curves, can be developed for many materials. When it can be shown that these R curves are characteristic of a material, and independent of specimen configuration, they will be useful to predict instability conditions for other specimen types.
