Abstract

A system of plane coordinates suitable for computational purposes in plane or geodetic surveying is defined by a corresponding transformation of coordinates; the opposite condition is also derived. Conformal mapping of a part of the earth's surface on a strip bordering a suitable curve in the area provides an optimum set of plane coordinates. This concept is used to give an indication of the underlying invariants of the more common regional plane coordinate systems.
