Abstract

Four strains of stalked budding bacteria were isolated from a water sample of Lagoa Vermelha, a salt pit near Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and compared to Planctomyces maris and Planctomyces limnophilus from which they differed in a number of characteristics, i.e. yellow pigmentation of the colonies, a significantly higher tolerance to artificial sea water or to NaCl, and a higher DNA base composition. The new isolates are, therefore, described as a new species: Planctomyces brasiliensis sp. nov.
