Abstract

Reactive-load switching is proposed to achieve a reconfigurable unidirectional pattern for a planar center-loaded linear Yagi dipole array. Two crossed arrays of dipoles are printed on both sides of a substrate in order to implement a scanning pattern in the whole horizontal plane, and each group consists of one active dipole and a couple of reactive-load parasitic dipoles. Due to the capacity of loaded value optimization, this antenna has good front-to-back ratio in its gain pattern; moreover, it has a compact structure and is suitable for integration with mobile terminals. Simulation and measurement are carried out to verify this design. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
