Abstract

Over the last few years the Camberwell Health Authority has been increasingly concerned about the number of long-stay patients blocking acute beds. This problem has become worse as the total number of beds available have been reduced. Furthermore, from the patient's point of view the acute ward is quite unsuitable for long-stay care because the emphasis is on the treatment of acute conditions and the staff are not geared to the very different needs of the chronic sick. In an attempt to solve this problem the Authority appointed an Officer to assess and relocate such patients. The patients in this survey were not suitable for Part III accommodation because they required full nursing care. Where the patient was deemed suitable for this, placement was arranged in private Nursing Homes. Of 149 referrals in ten months, 68 were successfully relocated in Nursing Homes. Only two had to be returned to the hospital. The effects of such placement on the patients quality of life and the cost of Nursing Home care are discussed.
