Abstract

Placental acetylcholine equivalents were measured in patients having second trimester spontaneous abortions, patients having therapeutic abortions with intra-amniotic hypertonic saline, and patients having therapeutic abortions with intra-amniotic hypertonic saline to which methylene blue was added. Placental acetylcholine equivalents of patients receiving methylene blue were less than those of the others and those with midtrimester abortions were highest. This observation correlates with the prolonged latent period that is frequently observed with patients having therapeutic abortions induced with intra-amniotic hypertonic saline containing methylene blue.
