Abstract

All three grades of placenta invasion can result in profuse intrapartum hemorrhage due to incomplete separation of the placenta. If the diagnosis can be made before delivery, it is possible to decrease the maternal morbidity and mortality and, if there is no uncontrollable hemorrhage, to avoid hysterectomy by leaving the placenta in situ and treating the patients with methotrexate and folinic acid.
